Empowering Dreams Through Education: Yesdi’s Story

Meet Yesdi, a determined 16-year-old 10th-grade student at Nicolás Christian School who lives in the village of Los Angeles. Yesdi is the second of four sisters in a family deeply rooted in education. Her father, Jacinto, is a public school teacher in Villa Hortensia 1, and her mother, Ana, teaches in Chichel. This family’s commitment to learning inspired Yesdi to pursue academic excellence, even when it meant stepping out of her comfort zone.

When Yesdi was in primary school, she often heard about Nicolás Christian School from other students and families in the Los Angeles community. She knew this wasn’t just any school. It provided a full-day program, whereas many secondary schools in the region only required a half-day program. What stood out to Yesdi was that Nicolas Christian School provided a structured and comprehensive education, known for its academic rigor. Even more so, the availability of a scholarship, Yesdi felt, would open doors of opportunity for her.

Determined to challenge herself, Yesdi persuaded her parents to allow her to attend Nicolás Christian School for 7th grade. Though it meant forfeiting her help at home during afternoons, her parents supported her decision. That leap of faith marked the beginning of a transformational journey.

Taking on Challenges and Thriving

Fast forward to today, and Yesdi is thriving in her fourth year at Nicolás Christian School. One of her favorite subjects is mathematics, which has become even more engaging thanks to EdQet, a personalized online mathematics program recently introduced at the school.

EdQet tailors its curriculum to each student, helping them master complex concepts through interactive videos, guided practice problems, and mastery tests. For a self-motivated student like Yesdi, this program has been a game-changer. She appreciates the clear, structured way it presents information and the opportunity it provides to revisit fundamental concepts, such as division.

EdQet, launched as a pilot program for 11th-grade students, delivered remarkable results. Last year, 100% of the 11th graders who took the university entrance exams passed, and several had exceptional math scores. Due to its success, Nicolás Christian School expanded the program to all grades, allowing young minds like Yesdi to strengthen their skills and build a confident foundation in mathematics.

But her aspirations don’t stop at math. Yesdi dreams of becoming a medical doctor with her own private practice. She also enjoys Natural Sciences and art — her favorite room in the new school building is the Art Lab, where she can unleash her creativity through drawing and painting.

Yesdi is also benefiting from Progrentis, another self-paced online program offered at Nicolás Christian School. Progrentis enhances students’ digital literacy, reading comprehension, logical thinking, and critical problem-solving skills. While some areas of technology, such as Excel, remain a challenge for her, Yesdi values how Nicolás Christian School is helping her develop the crucial competencies she needs for her future.

Growing Spiritually and Building a Foundation

Education at Nicolás Christian School extends beyond academics. Each day begins with morning devotionals, and scripture is woven into the fabric of daily life, extending even to signage with scriptural passages, such as those marking fire extinguishers and signs outside the bathrooms. While Yesdi admits her spiritual life is “complicated,” the school’s spiritual approach ensures that students remain connected to God’s word and draw inspiration from their faith.
