Born into a humble family deeply affected by the country’s internal armed conflict, her life was shaped by hardship, resilience, and an unshakable faith. Today, she stands as a beacon of hope, embodying the transformative power of education and community support.
Ana’s journey is not one of perfection, but of perseverance—a story of learning to endure, rise, and shine. “My story wasn’t what I dreamed,” Ana reflects, “but it was the one I needed to become who I am.”
From Fields of Hardship to Seeds of Hope
Growing up in a remote village near San Gaspar Chajul, Ana’s family faced immense challenges. Forced to relocate frequently, they eventually settled with her grandparents in a distant village in Santa María Nebaj. The journey to their new home took two days on foot—a grueling trek that symbolized the uphill battles they would face in the years ahead. Despite the hardships, Ana’s parents instilled in her the values of hard work and determination.
Ana loved learning, but in her community, free education ends after the sixth grade. Without the funds to pay for secondary school, her dream of continuing her education came to a halt. For five years, Ana’s classroom became the fields. She channeled her determination into farming, becoming a successful snow pea farmer to help support her family. Though her hands were in the soil, her heart never let go of the hope of returning to school.
A Prayer Answered, A Dream Ignited
In 2011, Ana dared to dream. She prayed for three things: a profession, a job, and a home of her own. At the time, these dreams felt impossibly distant. But Ana’s faith never wavered. When a partner from Agros Foundation offered her the chance to continue her education, she said “yes” without hesitation, even though she had no idea how it would come to fruition.
With the support of Nicolás Fund for Education (NFE), Ana received a scholarship in 2012. After five years away from the classroom, returning to her studies was a profound challenge. She was older than her classmates, and the academic material felt overwhelming. But Ana carried her dreams—and her meals—in her backpack, determined to succeed. “Every step was real,” she says. “I fought for my dreams, no matter how difficult it was.”
Faith as an Anchor
Ana’s faith became her anchor during the toughest moments. She found solace in scripture, often turning to verses that reminded her to be strong and courageous. “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” These words became her guiding light, propelling her forward.
In 2016, Ana graduated as part of the first class of Nicolás Christian School, earning her high school diploma in science and literature. But her journey didn’t end there. With NFE’s continued support, she pursued a degree in secondary education at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, all while working at Nicolás Christian School. By 2020, Ana had achieved her dream of becoming a teacher and continued her studies to earn her bachelor’s degree.
A Journey Comes Full Circle
Today, Ana is a proud teacher at Nicolás Christian School, where she teaches the Ixil language and oversees the greenhouse programs. Her journey has come full circle, as she now inspires the next generation of students to dream big and work hard. “I smile with a heart full of happiness,” Ana shares. “Not because the path was easy, but because God was with me every step of the way.”
